Landon House, Urbana, Maryland

  • Landon House, located in Urbana, Maryland, was the site of J.E.B Stuart's famous Sabers and Roses Ball on September 8, 1862.
  • Originally built along the Rappahannock River, Landon House was moved to Urbana in 1840.  It saw duty as both a female academy and a military school.
  • Just days after the famous ball, Landon House was back in use as a military hospital for the wounded from the Battle of Antietam.
  • A Civil War Trails sign explains the events surrounding the Sabers and Roses Ball.
  • View from the second floor balcony, looking out toward the old Washington Pike, now Route 355.
  • One of the main floor rooms in which the ball was held.
  • A large print of J.E.B. Stuart holds a place of honor.
  • Landon House is a popular spot for weddings and other events such as Civil War-themed children's birthday parties.
  • Next door to Landon House is the house where Anne Cockey, more commonly known as the New York Rebel, stayed in Urbana.
