Kelly's Ford, Virginia

  • The road towards Kelly's Ford, near the turnoff from Route 29.
  • The C.F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area - Rock Wall is the place to stop in order to visit the Pelham marker.
  • The parking area of the C.F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area.
  • Entrance to the path to the Pelham marker.
  • Be warned: It's a bit of a walk from the parking area to the marker.
  • Since the path is dirt and grass, the walk can be a sloppy one during wet weather.
  • Wild turkey, deer, quail, rabbits and squirrels are among the wildlife found in the area.
  • The marker near the spot where John Pelham was mortally wounded.
  • Major John Pelham, C.S.A. commanding the Stuart Horse Artillery was mortally wounded at this site in the Battle of Kelly's Ford, March 17 1863. Erected 1981 by Admirers of the Gallant Pelham.
  • Flowers and flags are often left by visitors to the site.
