Jacksonville Cemetery, John Pelham's Grave

  • Jacksonville Cemetery entrance is located at the corner of James St and Church Ave.
  • Pelham's body was interred here after his funeral at First Baptist Church.
  • The larger monument was placed at the site and unveiled at 2 p.m. Oct. 10, 1905.
  • The Pelham plot is at the front of the cemetery.
  • Today the cemetery overlooks a small shopping plaza.

  • Crossed swords decorate one side of the statues base.
  • Major John Pelham, born in Alexandria Alabama, September 14 1838, killed at the Battle of Kellys Ford, March 17 1863.
  • The marble was ordered from Sylacauga, which is known for producing some of the whitest marble in the world.
  • Erected by the John H. Forney Chapter U.D.C., Jacksonville Alabama 1905.
  • Gen. Forney had suggested that the chapters first project be a monument to the "Gallant Pelham".
  • Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti carved the likeness.
  • The statue was rededicated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its unveiling.
  • Today, power and telephone lines pass within feet of the statue.
