Most students of the War Between the States know only the bare bones about John Pelham. Some have read about him in Freeman’s “Lee’s Lieutenants,” and some have heard about him in connection with J.E.B. Stuart or the Battle of Fredericksburg. But the Average American has never even heard of him.
People who had met him, even if for only a moment, could never forget him. Accounts of him appear in many post war autobiographies and novels. Those who served under him were devoted to his memory.
The John Pelham Historical Association, founded on March 17, 1982, works to herald the memory of this extraordinary man; to study his life and career; to preserve existing Pelham monuments and erect new ones; and maintain the Pelham Archives in the town where he is buried, Jacksonville, Alabama.
